El Fogon & Salbutes
One of our favorite spots to eat is El Fogon, El Fogon means “the hearth”. The restaurant is located just off of back street across from the Tropic Air terminal. This is a true Belizean sit down restaurant offering a wide variety of fabulous lunch and dinner choices.
Salbutes are one of our favorites and the local dish one must try while in Belize. Salbutes originate from the Yucatán peninsula and are common in Belize. An El Fogon lunch, or dinner, salbute is a puffed deep fried tortilla that is topped with stewed chicken (or shrimp),a slice of tomato, coleslaw, and a jalapeno slice. They are delightfully messy to eat and mouth-watering good. In fact, we are known to order a few, run and check in at the airport, and head back to have one more helping of salbutes before heading out!

We fell in love with this quaint little spot owned by Olive and Luis Dominguez. They, along with their long-time staff, greet you with bright smiles. You are treated like family as soon as you walk in the door. You feel right at home as you sit on the picnic tables arranged on the sandy floor. Don’t dress up too much for this little spot, as it is partly a palapa, so it is cozy. There are floor fans placed just right to make sure you are cool as you enjoy your salbutes or any of the other delicious meat, seafood, or vegetarian dishes. Also, if you are a mojito enthusiast, they have the most delicious mojitos!
All in all, a must do while in San Pedro!
